Programs

Prepositioning of 300 cylinders of oxygen at Paillant Hospital in the Nippes department ensures a sufficient supply of oxygen for some time. This effort responds to repeated shortages of medical oxygen in the region due to frequent natural catastrophes and insecurity cutting the region off from Port-au-Prince. Photo by EpiC Haiti.

Achievements

Provided technical assistance for the operation and maintenance of 15 oxygen-generating pressure-swing adsorption (PSA) plants across nine departments to support consistent delivery of medical oxygen to each facility, as well as surrounding sites. These oxygen infrastructure investments have made medical oxygen available to maternity, pediatrics, surgery, internal medicine, and emergency wards in two hospitals serving the North and Northwest departments.

Trained 40 oxygen generator operators and technicians across 15 facilities, as well as two technicians from local partner Ayimed and four biomedical technicians from the Ministry of Health, to ensure optimal functioning of the newly installed oxygen generation equipment.

Built capacity for clinical care, including the provision of oxygen therapy, through clinical training sessions and creation of a Whats App-based community of practice to connect health care workers, continue to share best practices, and disseminate COVID-related information. A total of 97 health care workers received training, and 72 joined the Whats App group.

Contributed to a national increase in the COVID-19 vaccine rate by administering 37,229 COVID-19 vaccine doses through a combination of approaches: direct service delivery at vaccination sites; holding mass vaccination events in the South, Nippes and Grand-Anse departments; and community engagement activities including door-to-door campaigns, health committees, and engaging spiritual and religious leaders as influencers. This was achieved during significant civil unrest in a volatile security environment.
