Period of performance: September 2020 – September 2025

Achievements

Partnered with the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) to roll out COVID-19 vaccination activities: (1) Trained lead trainers who in turn trained 18,925 vaccinators and 1,139 other health professionals. (2) Provided logistics and management support for vaccination campaigns in low-coverage districts and strengthened capacity for ultra-cold chain systems and management within the Central Vaccine Store of the Management Division of the MOHP. (3) Conducted a demand generation campaign in collaboration with Meta, reaching nearly three million users on Facebook. These activities resulted in the provision of 2,333,427 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Strengthened COVID-19 vaccination data and reporting systems by providing servers, laptops, and staff to register, verify, and certify vaccination data and track vaccine delivery, deployment, and administration.

Built the capacity of the health workforce to provide high-quality clinical care for COVID-19 patients by training 357 providers on adult and pediatric essential critical care and 339 providers on basic emergency care. EpiC Nepal also trained 43 ambulance drivers to provide emergency medical transportation and prepared 192 health workers to deploy rapid response teams. EpiC partnered with the National Health Training Center, the Health Emergency Operation Center, and the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division of the MOHP to enroll learners and conduct these training sessions.

Supported the Management Division of the MOHP to safely dispose of 1.2 million syringes and needles used during COVID-19 vaccination activities. EpiC also collaborated with the MOHP to conduct an assessment of health care waste management in 12 facilities in Lumbini province.

Strengthened the capacity of the National Public Health Laboratory to conduct genomic sequencing by supplying reagents, information technology (IT) equipment, software, training, and short-term human resources, resulting in the identification of the first cases of the Omicron variant in the country.

Improved hospital infrastructure by installing liquid medical oxygen systems at six hospitals and upgrading the emergency department in two hospitals. EpiC also procured oxygen and emergency care equipment, including intensive care unit (ICU) beds and monitors, oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders, high-flow nasal cannulas, and bilevel positive airway pressure machines, which the Management Division of the MOHP distributed across public hospitals.
