Achievements

Assessed capacity to provide critical care and supported installation of mechanical ventilators in 60 hospitals to address critical care needs during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Increased capacity to provide clinical care: developed emergency care training modules in collaboration with Maldives National University; established a simulation lab equipped for skills-based training of medical professionals; trained 16 lead trainers (who in turn trained 789 health care workers) in adult COVID-19 case management; and certified 240 Advanced Emergency Care Professionals and Basic Emergency Care and First-Aid responders.

Assessed the medical oxygen system in 16 health facilities and seven oxygen-producing plants, which informed an action plan to strengthen the medical oxygen ecosystem that was adopted by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Supported the MOH to assess COVID-19 vaccine uptake among certain population subgroups. Conducted a formative assessment on vaccine hesitancy in collaboration with UNICEF Maldives and the Health Promotion Bureau and analyzed national data on morbidity and mortality linked to vaccination coverage in collaboration with the Maldives National University.

Established the first ever genome sequencing facility at the National Health Laboratory (NHL), enabling the MOH to conduct genome sequencing for all infectious diseases including mpox, HIV, and TB: delivered all required equipment and consumables; collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) for installation of the genome sequencing machine; and trained all NHL staff to use the equipment.
