Achievements

Completed construction and inaugurated medical liquid oxygen infrastructure at six health facilities, resulting in the capacity to provide oxygen to 1,553 patient beds.

Established an oxygen distribution system through which facilities with liquid oxygen infrastructure can supply surrounding lower-level facilities with oxygen in cylinders. As a result, oxygen cylinders have been delivered to 28 catchment facilities.

Negotiated medical oxygen pricing with a local supplier for six health facilities to control cost variations during the 12 months of oxygen supply provided by the EpiC project. EpiC is supporting the government to negotiate prices going forward as part of a sustainability plan.

Built the capacity of hospital staff to use and maintain the medical oxygen systems by developing new training and management tools and standard operating procedures. EpiC trained 70 hospital staff on safety and equipment management, 45 clinicians on the provision of oxygen therapy to patients, and 36 biomedical staff on liquid oxygen equipment maintenance and operation.

Developed a District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) e-tracker module to collect data on liquid oxygen custom indicators, in alignment with the national system and with support from the Ministry of Health (MOH). The e-tracker allows EpiC, the MOH, and health facilities that produce liquid oxygen to closely monitor assets acquired, the liquid oxygen supply, and oxygen consumption at the facility level. Tracking data at this level allows for more effective resource management so that facilities can plan for deliveries, avoid waste, enhance patient outcomes, and improve operational efficiency. It is estimated that 27 facilities will report oxygen data through DHIS2 by the end of 2025.
