On March 22^nd, the USAID– and PEPFAR-supported EpiC and LINKAGES projects collaborated with the Arab Foundation for Freedoms and Equality (AFE) to host a webinar in a series on topics related to HIV prevention, care, and treatment for key populations—sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender people, and people who inject drugs. The work presented in this webinar was supported by the Middle East Bureau Technical Services Health Office and the Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance Bureau. The webinar included simultaneous interpretation in English, French, and Arabic.

Globally, key populations’ experiences of violence are well documented and known to result in significant harms both to individuals and the health and well-being of entire communities. Countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are no exception. In recent years, a series of extreme situations across MENA have highlighted that hostile environments and rights violations affect the security not only of key population members, but also the people, organizations, and programs that support them and their right to health.

During the webinar, civil society organizations providing HIV services in MENA describe the security challenges they face, recent efforts undertaken to improve their security, and the impacts on both their workers and project outcomes. In addition, LINKAGES presents a new security tool designed to help organizations that provide HIV services to assess and address security gaps. The tool was developed for the MENA region, but it is relevant to HIV programmers working in any hostile environment.
